COVID-19 Hotel Quarantine Inquiry Report Released

The COVID-19 Hotel Quarantine Inquiry report, which was put infront of Parliament this morning, found Victoria’s 2nd wave was generated by transmission of the virus from hotel quarantine into the public through poorly trained private security guards.

Hotels also had low cleaning products and training and guards made inadequate usage  of personal protective equipment. There are 81 recommendations and  no answer as to who was accountable for organising private security. There are some damning health, safety, training and company competency findings all the same that the government, or other organisations, can use as a model to improve provider quality.

“The inquiry report finding is likely to shock the public,” said by Ms Coate.

“The decision as to the enforcement model for people detained in quarantine was a substantial part of an important public health initiative and it cost the Victorian community many millions of dollars.

Key points:

  • The report found former police chief Graham Ashton was consulted about using private security
  • It found consideration was not given to the implications of exposing a largely casualised workforce to COVID-19
  • The lack of planning for mass quarantining by both Victoria and the Commonwealth was “most unsatisfactory”, it said.
